How Commission Works at JLT
At JLT, agents receive an 80/20 commission split from their very first booking. There are no tiers to work through or minimum booking targets to hit before accessing this rate.
Commission payments run every Friday. Once a client has paid in full for their holiday, agents can submit a commission claim form that same week. The payment arrives before the client even travels.
For context, if you book a honeymoon in March and your clients pay the balance by early April, you receive your commission that same month, even though the couple might not fly until September.
The Practical Side
Early commission payments help new agents reinvest in their business, cover startup costs, and feel the momentum of growth without long waiting periods between bookings and payments.
What Training Covers
JLT Academy walks new agents through the foundations: industry regulations, ATOL protection, Package Travel Regulations, booking systems, and how to navigate supplier relationships.
The training also includes the practical skills that help agents feel confident in client conversations. How to build a quote that feels personalised rather than generic. How to ask questions that uncover what a client truly wants from their holiday. How to structure a fact-finding conversation so the itinerary you create feels spot-on.
These elements come through a mix of structured modules, live training sessions, and ongoing practice with feedback from experienced team members.
What Happens After Training
Training gets you started, but ongoing support keeps you moving forward when questions or challenges pop up.
How Support Actually Works

JLT’s support structure includes several layers designed to meet different needs as they arise.
Daily Q&A clinics run on Zoom. Agents can drop in with a booking question, a system query, or a tricky client scenario and get guidance in real time during these live sessions.
Bookable 1-1 sessions offer personalised support when an agent needs focused help on a specific situation or wants to talk through business planning.
Wellness and clarity calls recognise that sometimes what’s needed isn’t a technical answer but a moment to pause, reset, and regain perspective.
Email and WhatsApp channels stay open for quick questions throughout the week.
A private agent community provides peer-to-peer support where members share supplier tips, celebrate first bookings, troubleshoot challenges, and encourage one another.
The Community Element
Support at JLT isn’t just top-down from the core team. It’s woven into the relationships agents build with each other.
Building Under Your Own Brand
JLT agents can choose to trade under their own business name. You receive a @thejltgroup.co.uk email address, professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and full access to JLT’s systems, licences, and supplier network, while presenting your own brand to clients.
For agents who want to build something that feels personal and distinct, this flexibility matters.
For those who prefer to operate under JLT’s established branding, that option exists too. The choice belongs to each agent.
The Business Model: Travel First
JLT’s focus centres on booking travel. Agents join to create itineraries, build client relationships, and grow their travel businesses.
Success at JLT comes from the holidays you book, the clients you serve, and the business you grow through travel sales.
Why This Matters
When the business model focuses on travel, your time and energy go toward building booking skills, supplier knowledge, and client relationships rather than recruitment activities.
The Technology Behind the Bookings

JLT provides access to TopDog, a live reservation platform with API connections to over 200 suppliers. The system delivers real-time pricing and instant availability across accommodation, flights, and transfers.
Dynamic packaging capabilities allow agents to combine elements with ATOL protection.
Quick-quote software and an itinerary builder help create professional proposals efficiently.
Client payments process through a PTS trust account with competitive transaction fees, which means agents don’t need to set up their own merchant accounts or handle client funds directly.
The Practical Benefit
When booking systems work smoothly in the background, agents spend more time in conversation with clients and less time wrestling with technology.
What the Community Feels Like
JLT has grown to more than 400 agents in just over four years. The group has booked over £15 million in travel since January 2025.
The community culture centres on collaboration. Agents share insights about suppliers, post questions when they’re stuck, celebrate milestone bookings, and offer encouragement when someone feels nervous about a complex enquiry.
Annual Events and FAM Trips
JLT hosts an annual conference called JLT Jamboree, bringing agents together for supplier workshops, networking, awards, and social events. The 2025 event at Mottram Hall in Cheshire welcomed over 100 agents, plus 25 suppliers and tourist boards.
Agents also have access to FAM (familiarisation) trips with suppliers, giving them firsthand experience of destinations and properties they can then confidently recommend to clients.
These experiences build both product knowledge and relationships within the travel community.
The Learning Curve
Travel expertise develops through a combination of formal training, peer learning, supplier relationships, and direct experience. JLT provides access to all these channels.
How JLT Continues to Evolve
JLT operates on a principle of continuous improvement. The team regularly adds training modules, refines systems, and listens to agent feedback to identify what’s working and what needs adjustment.
This approach keeps the business responsive to the real needs of working agents rather than locked into fixed systems.
What This All Comes Down To

JLT offers a structured pathway into independent travel agency work, backed by training, technology, support, and a collaborative community.
The model centres on transparency in commission structures, accessibility in support systems, and flexibility in how agents build their businesses.
If you’re exploring what it takes to work as an independent travel agent, understanding how JLT operates can help you assess whether the structure, values, and community align with what you’re looking for.
