What Happens If Something Goes Wrong With a Booking?

A concerned man seated at a wooden desk facing a laptop, holding his temples as he looks intently at the screen in a horizontal indoor office-style shot, with shelving and soft furnishings blurred in the background, representing stress, troubleshooting, or dealing with an issue online such as booking problems, customer service challenges, or unexpected business complications.

If you’re thinking about becoming a travel agent, this question has probably crossed your mind more than once.

“What if a flight gets cancelled? What if a hotel isn’t what the client expected? What if I make a mistake?”

It’s a fair worry. And if we’re being honest, things do go wrong sometimes. Flights change. Suppliers make errors. Clients have expectations that don’t match the brochure. That’s the reality of travel, and pretending otherwise wouldn’t help anyone.

But here’s what most people don’t realise before they start: the difference between a stressful situation and a full-blown crisis almost always comes down to the systems and support you have behind you.

The Quick Answer

  • Yes, things can and do go wrong with bookings. That’s normal in travel.
  • No, you are not expected to handle it alone. Not ever.
  • JLT agents are backed by financial protection schemes (ATOL and PTS), insurance cover, and a real team who picks up the phone.
  • The agents who handle problems well aren’t the ones who know everything. They’re the ones who know where to turn.

Financial Protection: Your Client’s Safety Net

One of the biggest fears new agents have is: “What if the supplier goes bust and my client loses their money?”

This is where ATOL and PTS come in.

ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) is a UK financial protection scheme. When a client books a package holiday that includes flights through an ATOL holder, their money is protected. If the company goes out of business, the client is covered.

PTS (Protected Trust Services) adds another layer. All client payments go into a secure trust account, not a company’s everyday bank account. That means client money is ring-fenced and only used to pay for their holiday arrangements. If the worst happened and a company stopped trading, clients wouldn’t lose their funds.

For agents, this changes everything. You’re not holding client money in your own accounts. You’re not personally liable if a supplier collapses. The protection is built into the system.

In JLT’s academy, ATOL and PTS training is covered in depth. It sounds intimidating at first, but agents consistently say it’s far more straightforward than they expected once it’s explained clearly.

Insurance That Has Your Back

Beyond ATOL and PTS, JLT provides Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, and Employers’ Liability Insurance as standard.

There’s also the option to add Errors and Omissions (E&O) cover. This is an extra layer of protection in case you make a personal mistake that results in a financial impact on the business. Not every agent takes it out, and it’s completely optional. But it’s there if you want peace of mind.

The point is this: you’re not exposed. The structure is designed so that when something goes sideways, there’s a safety net already in place.

The Support You Can’t Put a Price On

Financial protection matters. But what agents talk about most isn’t the insurance or the trust accounts. It’s the people.

When a booking hits a bump, the worst feeling isn’t the problem itself. It’s not knowing who to call. In JLT, that’s the one thing you never have to worry about.

Weekly group coaching and Q&A sessions mean agents can raise anything that’s on their mind, from a supplier query to a client complaint they’re not sure how to handle. Dedicated WhatsApp groups cover general support, specialist niches, and supplier updates, so there’s always someone who’s dealt with something similar. A 4-week sign-off group is built specifically for brand new agents to help them settle in without feeling overwhelmed. And access to supplier-specific groups means you can get answers direct from the people who know the product best.

It’s not a helpline you call and wait on hold. It’s a community that’s already talking. When something goes wrong at 9pm on a Thursday, chances are someone in the group has handled it before and can walk you through it.

That layered support, real people combined with proper financial protection, is what turns a stressful moment into a manageable one.

What the Academy Teaches You Before Problems Even Happen

JLT’s training doesn’t skip over the hard stuff. The academy includes 26 modules covering legal compliance, booking scenarios, PTS system walkthroughs, ATOL certification, and real-world problem-solving.

There are dedicated sections on PTS scenarios like insufficient funds, refunds, payment reimbursements, and cancellations. There’s a full module on what to do when basket time-outs happen or when you need to cancel flights already confirmed.

The goal isn’t to make you an expert on day one. It’s to make sure you know where to look and who to call when something unexpected comes up.

For Your Client Conversations

Here’s something worth thinking about. When a client books through a trained, supported agent, they get a level of protection and human backup that booking direct on a website can’t match.

If a hotel falls through at midnight, they’re not navigating a chatbot. They’ve got you. And you’ve got a team.

That’s a powerful thing to be able to say to a potential client. And it’s true.

Keep Building!

No one gets into travel hoping things go wrong. But knowing you’re covered when they do? That’s the difference between building with confidence and building with fear.
