Virgin Atlantic Strengthens Its Home in the North | JLT Daily Dispatch

At a Glance

Virgin Atlantic is increasing Manchester-Orlando flights from 12 to 19 weekly services during peak summer 2026, a 12% capacity boost. Winter 2026 brings 17% more seats with Airbus A350-1000 upgrades on the Orlando route.

The expansion follows Aer Lingus withdrawing all transatlantic flights from Manchester by the end of March. New York frequency is also rising from five to six weekly flights. Bookings open today, with further growth planned for summer 2027.

Filling the Gap

Virgin Atlantic is marking its 30th year at Manchester by expanding when others are stepping back.

The airline has announced a significant expansion of long-haul services from its Northern base, arriving as Aer Lingus confirmed it would end all transatlantic routes from Manchester by late March 2026. While Aer Lingus’s last New York flight departs on 23 February, Virgin is already opening the taps.

Direct long-haul access from Manchester has always been a draw, particularly for families who’d rather skip the journey to Heathrow. Now there’s more of it.

The Practical Bit

The Practical Bit

Here’s what’s changing: Manchester to Orlando jumps from 12 weekly flights in summer 2025 to 19 weekly at peak times in summer 2026. That’s seven more services each week, translating to a 12% capacity increase during the busiest travel periods.

Come winter 2026, Virgin is swapping in its Airbus A350-1000 aircraft on the Orlando route, adding 17% more seats. The A350 is newer, quieter, and offers a more comfortable cabin across all classes.

Manchester to New York is also getting a boost, moving from five to six weekly flights. It’s not a dramatic leap, but it’s another frequency that could make the difference when dates are tight.

Virgin has said it’s actively welcoming Aer Lingus pilots and helping to rebook affected passengers.

For Your Client Conversations

Orlando remains one of the most-requested family destinations, anchored by Disney and Universal parks. The challenge has always been securing decent flight times during school holidays without routing through hubs or paying a premium for limited availability.

More frequencies help here. Nineteen weekly flights during peak summer offers far more flexibility when building itineraries around what works for families. And the A350 upgrade in winter adds comfort that matters on an eight-hour flight with children.

Manchester Airport has welcomed the news, emphasising the importance of connecting the North to the US without requiring a London transfer.

Looking ahead, Virgin has hinted at further expansion to New York, Las Vegas, and Barbados by summer 2027. The airline operates a fleet of 43 aircraft with an average age of around 7.8 years, so capacity and kit are both in good shape.

With bookings opening today, this expansion offers a long-term alternative with more choice and upgraded aircraft on key routes. Virgin’s actively assisting passengers affected by the Aer Lingus withdrawal.
